As some will appreciate, it will be a rather short update this week. I have been busy in a number of things this week, from having dinner with one of our churches families this week, I explored potential new ministries for the future with others, prepared the sermon for the week continuing the series on Hosea, plus making plans and contacts for the Bikers Rally for The Homeless to Benefit Mosaic in July. I am also contemplating my vacation in July and trying to make that a working vacation on my way to and from Tennessee/North Carolina/South Carolina with my family. Whew! Did I also mention I am contemplating leaving a day early and taking that vacation trip on my motorcycle while my family drives cars?
You know sometimes life can get busy, it can be difficult. There have been moments this week it has been that way for me. From dealing with conflict I didn’t want as some question Mosaic’s emphasis on the poor and then having a friend get upset at me, for who knows what. Funny how that type of thing happens isn’t it? One moment life is fine, you are singing the praises of a friend, and then, without notice, they get upset at you. I have to admit, I am still trying to figure this thing called life out. The other truth is, it isn’t always easy just because I follow Jesus. Neither will it be for you. I challenge, church is the place where we can be there for each other, to help each other out, pray for each other, and sometimes, just have someone there who understands. Many call church extended family, others like me, have learned, it is more than ‘extended’ family, it is in reality, ‘FAMILY!’ There are those in our community that need Mosaic, and as surely as we go through tough times, we will discover times where others are there for us, God has a way, of putting the right people, in the right place, at the right time. It is not that God don’t care, sometimes, we are not in the right place where God is working. I have recognized issues with many churches in the past, that is natural, but as messed up as the church is, she is still the bride of Christ and He loves her. It is still the place where we can experience the love of God. We can be at that place where we can interact with FAMILY, and share in the worship experience, learning together, about this thing called Christianity or walking with God.
Mosaic isn’t a perfect church, but I am honored to serve at what I consider a good church. I am honored to have those in our small body I call brothers and sisters. I am convinced we are doing a good thing for the Kingdom of God. I hope to share that experience with others including those who don’t have a church. We want you, truth is, and we need you. If not in a church, give us a try, if God is leading you to our church from another church; speak to us and your current pastor about if God would have you at Mosaic. Otherwise, we appreciate your prayers, and we would love to pray for you and your church.
Now in closing, understand if you want to be on the churches email list, simply email us at mikefurches@yahoo.com and I will place you on the Mosaic mailing list.
Appreciate your prayers and hope to see you soon.
Blessings,
Mike

Mosaic Update, Bikers Rally, Drive In Movies and More
This Friday night we are excited as some of us are going to the Drive In Movies here in Wichita. We will be leaving the church around 8:30 or 30 minutes prior to sunset. There are folks going where others can ride along and it is $10 per car load. We will then follow up with a Vision Team Meeting on Saturday from 11AM – 12:30 Pm where we will be discussing a number of things related to Mosaic and the church. Then of course there is Mother’s Day and the celebration of church on Sunday. Also I just want to remind everyone to plan something special for their wives or moms for this day.
We are not feeding this Saturday at Mosaic so we want to let folks know that, we are as of now feeding on the 1st and last Saturday of each month. We currently need groups and volunteers to help out with this. We have been averaging around 75 per feeding over the last weeks. This is a good project for a church, youth group, business group or others. We don’t feed on the other weeks due to others in the community doing things at Naked Lady Park. We have opened up our facility for them to use in the past but no one is taking advantage of that offer at this time.
There are a number of things happening in the future to be aware of. The biggies at this point are outlined in the bulletin. There is a possibility of changing the date of the men’s retreat so some of us can participate in Hope’s Biker Sunday. We are planning our own Biker’s for the Homeless to Benefit Mosaic on the last Sunday in July. Gerry McCan from Hope Community Church will be heading up our service on that particular Sunday and we anticipate having upwards of over 100 motorcycles here on that particular Sunday.
Please continue to keep Mosaic in prayer as we look at the possibility and need to transition. Bottom line is we need people to be committed. In the last weeks we have had a few folks commit to the church and that is good, one wants to work in theater and the arts and another wanting to work in helping with Final Friday’s.
Appreciate your prayers and hope to see you soon.
Blessings,

Mosaic Wichita News & The Hunger Games
Greetings to all of our Mosaic family and friends.
I don’t know about all of you, but what a busy week, and for some of us, what a busy weekend is ahead of us.
It has been a great week for the Furches family despite Mary Jane having a molar tooth pulled on Thursday. We were blessed to go hear friend Gerry McCann from Hope Community Church perform at a local eating establishment on Tuesday night, Ben and Luigis on North Woodlawn. What a blessed time it was and we actually had a lot of fun. If ever having the chance to hear Gerry, do so, also please support this eating establishment as they are a Christian family doing a great deal of wonderful ministry in the area.
One of the things I discussed with Gerry is the possibility of doing a Bikers to Benefit the Homeless and Mosaic outreach in July. Gerry explained to me that he thought we could get at least 100 bikers to attend and so we are now planning for July the event that can bring awareness to the homeless ministries Mosaic is doing as well as hopefully raise some much needed funds. Gerry will be performing for our service and for all of you old rock n rollers out there, especially those liking some of the classic Contemporary Christian Music; you are going to have a great time. I have also had other bands and people contact me about helping out, who knows, this may end up being a most of the day event. Be in prayer about that as I am excited but it will make for a busy July as I will also be taking a vacation with my wife and children to Tennessee for the first part of July.
Mosaic is also getting ready for homeless feedings both this weekend and next weekend. We will be feeding on Saturday and Sunday after church. While the attendance has been down the last couple of weeks, we hope to pick back up again with all of those a regular part of Mosaic and those we are reaching out to, especially the homeless. We could use some help this weekend for the feeding as we will need to prepare food and serve those taking advantage of our ministry. We will be at church to get everything ready on Saturday at 11:AM, we will start feeding at noon. On Sunday we will also be giving out backpacks to the homeless at church that need them thanks to a kind donation from a local family. Next week we will have a Women’s Bible Study Group from Hope Community Church helping out and serving the meal on Saturday. We are so grateful for all of the groups that help share in this ministry. We need to remember, it is time the churches came together and supported each other out in the ministry of the Kingdom.
I also want to remind folks that we will be hosting a meeting with Mayor Brewer on Monday morning along with other advocates for the homeless from the city of Wichita. That meeting starts at 7:45 AM. We will provide refreshments and coffee for that meeting. Any help with serving for this meeting would also be greatly appreciated as we explore the possibility of Mosaic being used for additional shelter for youth. We are in the exploration phase of that at this point and are just honored to host again, city leaders and the Mayor at this meeting.
Make sure to check out the bulletin, there are various events coming up ranging from a men’s retreat to Palo Duro Canyon in Amarillo Texas in June, The Drive in Movies, a Cook-Out, Arena Football and more. We want to do things as a family in coming together; we want you to be a part of that. Also, please remember, if transportation or costs is ever an issue, let us know, we will do what we can to help folks out. We also appreciate the help from those who assist in making it possible for the homeless to participate in family and body events through your kind contributions to Mosaic.
This Sunday’s service will be quite unique as we look at lessons from the movies and books Battle Royale and The Hunger Games. Most of you are likely aware of these two movies and their success around the world right now. This will be an interesting message, with numerous videos and even a little music from various sources. I am looking forward to it and if you are a fan of either Battle Royale or The Hunger Games, you will likely enjoy and get something out off this. If you aren’t you will get something out of it for sure that will better help you understand today’s society, issues, problems and solutions.
There is also attached a letter for you to review and pray about regarding the Wichita Police Departments proposed HOT Program that has been presented at Mosaic. I encourage each person to write a letter of support of your own, but we as a body will be voting on this letter of support next week so I can get that to Officer Nathan Schwiethale who is heading up this program. We also encourage other churches, business and civic groups to support this program. If interested in having the program presented at your group, please let me know and I will provide the contact information.
That will about cover it for now, thanks for your time, and we hope to see you this Sunday at Mosaic.
Blessings to you and may God bless you in your faithfulness to His Call.

Mosaic Church Weekly Update Easter Sunday
This Sunday at Mosaic, we incorporate ministry life with church life because our church life is representative of the ministry we do. This Sunday at 216 S. Market a little church named Mosaic will have Easter Services that challenge followers of Jesus to do more than just come to church and celebrate themselves, but to challenge followers of Jesus to come together to do the things Jesus came to earth for, and ultimately resurrected for. There are commands that Jesus made after the resurrection that I think to ignore would in reality devalue the purpose of the cross. So many churches this week will have guests, so many of those guests will attend church a few times a year because they don’t see the church practicing what they are called to practice. Each and every follower of Jesus, each and every church is called to do ministry, and at that, specific ministry. At Mosaic we have taken those commands seriously because we realize we serve a savior who gave his all for us, in a loving relationship we also realize that we want to serve the one who first loved us, not because we have to, but because we want to. This weekend, many of those we have reached out to, those who are poor and homeless will celebrate the Resurrection with us.
One of the things that makes us different is that we are largely made up of those who are homeless and while there are other churches, groups, and individuals who reach out to them, we recognize that they are a part of our congregation, we don’t separate them, we don’t set them aside or serve them once or twice a week, we serve everyday and we have recognized there is a difference of ‘doing ministry for’ and ‘becoming a part of.’ We practice what we talk, and have done what we say. This Sunday, we celebrate together this thing called family with people we know Jesus spent time with, and ultimately, commanded to love. While there will be some who take issue with what I say next I pray you receive it in a good way, but I have no problem promoting Mosaic because I know at Mosaic you see Jesus and his work in action, people at Mosaic on Easter Sunday will see those Jesus has called his followers to serve and love, because they are a part of us.
If receiving this via our web site or blog, please email me at mikefurches@yahoo.com to receive the weekly newsletter with the church bulletin attached

Mosaic Update, Approaching Easter
As I write this, this morning, I can’t help but wonder, are there those who are really so spiritual that they don’t need to observe certain holidays? What I mean is in reference to those who say things like ‘we should celebrate Christmas, or Easter’ every day!’ While there is a measure of truth in those statements, I can’t help but know my own life, I need at times those reminders and as we approach Easter this year, there are reminders all around me as to the concepts of death, and rebirth, reminders as to the continuing and working power of the Holy Spirit in the lives of those he loves and cares for. For me, I need the reminders and find them worthwhile. To spend time focusing this year on the sacrifice but ultimately the rebirth and newness of life exemplified in the resurrection of Jesus is a reminder that those things can be, and are, available for not just me, but those who follow after the Son of God.
There are presently two events in my life that remind me of this which I can look at as examples of how God continues to resurrect the dead. One is a personal family issue our family has been dealing with for some time. I am reluctant to say that resurrection has occurred but I continue to have hope it is occurring in the life of a loved one. I continue to pray, this Sunday as I teach on Luke 15, including the story of the Prodigal Son, that hope is exemplified even more than usual.
Another situation is the closing of our women’s shelter. This Sunday morning will be the last morning of operation for our shelter. I am concerned for the women who will no longer have any place to go. I am concerned over a many people who say they follow Jesus yet, either seem to not care, or don’t take into consideration these types of things. The ladies at Mosaic (as I call them) are handling the situation better than I, but they still have skepticism and many have come out and told me how much they appreciated what we have done. For them, it is a new start, one that includes the death of a program and the hope of a better tomorrow.
This Sunday in recognition of the little church that could (Mosaic) and those who have been a part of the program we are going to be cooking out for the ladies, a guest of their discretion, or their families, and those attending church on Sunday. This is a way I believe I can give a little back to those who have participated in the shelter. The cook-out will be for those attending church, and the ladies of the shelter plus one guest or their families.
As the shelter starts to end, I will take some time to take off, only to recoup and move to starting up our day program again on April 10. This program will operate 3 days a week, plus we will move to having meals again on the 1st and last Saturday of each month starting after April 10. We will have a small group from Eastside Church of God here this Saturday at 11:30 to assist with feeding the homeless. We will start the regular rotation after April 10. In this new venture we need volunteers to assist through the week and on weekends. We have already heard this is something many homeless are looking forward to.
I am also excited about the redirection of my own efforts in the next weeks, including instituting some programs to help with the Spiritual Growth of those committed to Mosaic, and ministry to those in the community including the institution of a Celebrate Recovery Group to meet during the day in the downtown area.
A lot is happening, a lot that symbolizes death and rebirth, all of this as we move closer to Easter Week. Remember, God is good All The Time, and All The Time, God is good.

Mosaic Weekly Update The End of a Service
It has been said before, ‘all good things must come to an end.’ I have to ask though, do they really?
As many know Mosaic has offered and provided a shelter for women since November 1, 7 days a week, each evening from 6 PM – 7 AM. That has included meals each evening and morning for the ladies staying at our shelter, and with 4 staff persons, 3 for the duration of the program, and numerous staff and with a large number of women, some 10-13 a night on average, we have seen a lot of things take place, from some ladies who have gotten their lives back together complete with jobs and housing, to the tragedies such as loosing a baby shared with others. While it has certainly been an enjoyable ride, it has also had its hardships. I recall the worst part of having to turn down services to women with small children each day during the weeks leading up to Christmas, and the reality that after the morning of April 1, many women will once again, in our city, be back on the streets on a nightly basis. There have been personal benefits though, it has been a joy to have a small income for myself from working at the shelter, plus knowing that others also obtained an income. On the whole, I have learned to appreciate the plight of many of the homeless women in Wichita, I also realize the need for continued services. How we as a church, as small as we are can do that is beyond my reasoning and understanding at the moment.
The truth is, I will challenge most any other church, not from the perspective of bragging but to legitimately challenge the church to be the Body of Christ to the poor as Scripture mandates, to do as much with what they have, as Mosaic has done in the past months since our location to the downtown area. Don’t just be a water or tea church though, that is a church whose extent of interaction is to offer a homeless person a cup of water or tea, but instead, offer a ministry that gets to know people that helps them beyond the moment of their condition. Offer a service that goes towards building a sense of self-respect while at the same time promoting the reality of consequence for actions. Be a church that looks at, shares in life with, those who Jesus has called us to be with and love. When churches do their part, then small churches like Mosaic will not have to bare the burden of ministry on their backs alone. Let me say with caution as I am concerned how many will respond to this, but I am honored that my family will once again with the completion of this ministry, go on serving the homeless at a great cost, including the likelihood that we will have a drastic reduction in finance as we won’t have a guaranteed income outside of what little we get from The Virtual Pew, speaking opportunities, and outside donations. But again, we do this gladly, knowing that ‘what does it profit one to gain the whole world and lose their souls.’ We also know ‘man cannot live on bread alone, nor can we serve two masters.’ We serve with joy, despite the difficulty, because we know that the kingdom of God is advanced.
Mosaic will continue, I am looking forward to decent sleep hours over the next months, I am looking forward to seeing the day program hopefully come back to life, (we still need volunteers for this) and I am looking forward to doing what I can to serve those interested in Mosaic outside of the homeless population. There are still dreams, still visions to do not less, but to do more. To explore ways to offer services that will meet the needs of our people. Over the next months I joy at trying to discover ways, along with the congregation as to how we can serve those who actively become a part of our church, including our homeless members. I also joy in the start up and exploration of a Celebrate Recovery Group and weekly day and evening gatherings to discuss scripture and life. There is a future, and God is still Jehovah Jireh so I am excited.
This week we will have tonight, (Friday) a gathering of youth and adults to go to Lake Eldorado to participate in a bonfire together. Robert Beard a new participant at the church helping with the youth will be leading this and future activities. We are also going to be hosting from the Wichita Police Department Officer Nathan on Sunday morning as he discusses the new proposal before the city of Wichita having to deal with serving the homeless in our city, The HOT program. As a church we will evaluate the program in consideration of writing a letter of support from the church to the city in support of this new proposed program.
There is more in the future for Mosaic. Despite what some have thought, we have grown in many ways, God continues to provide enough funds to get by, but we still need you and want you to stay involved, supporting the work of the church, as well as the ministry that God has not just called Mosaic to, but I believe the church as a whole.
We also realize that many receiving our newsletter or seeing this on the web are part of other churches. We want to pray for your church or you as an individual as you have need, we also appreciate the prayers and support that you can offer our way. You can do this in a variety of ways, either donating on line at our web site at www.mocaicwichita.com or at our Mailing Address: P.O. Box 47261, Wichita, KS 67201, however you contribute, it is greatly appreciated.
We appreciate all you have done, and if you want to be on the weekly email list for Mosaic where you will receive regular updates, and/or the weekly bulletin, don’t hesitate letting us know by emailing me at mikefurches@yahoo.com or letting us know by visiting our web site.
Now as a last note, I know many are going to the movies this weekend to see The Hunger Games. While it may be a worthwhile film to see, I will also encourage you to consider the movie October Baby, see my recent review of the film here - http://mikefurchesreviews.blogspot.com/2012/03/october-baby.html
Blessings to you and may God bless you in your faithfulness to His Call.

Mosaic Weekly Update
Over the last weeks things have been a little hectic at Mosaic due to a number of events. I guess the hectic nature comes with the ministry we often do, just this afternoon I heard of one of the ladies we serve who just lost her baby which died this morning. She didn’t have custody of the baby but this doesn’t negate the hurt. We also have one of our volunteers whom I have had the honor of mentoring that lost his mother last weekend. Unfortunately he had been saving to buy him a truck as he has been working, but he had to use $2,200 of his earnings to pay for his mother’s funeral. There have been other things happening, but the ministry God has called us to isn’t just a call, it is a commitment.
This weekend on Saturday we are planning on feeding as we have the Wichita Police Department come to our facility to discuss and present the new planning and efforts that are being proposed regarding policies and treatment of Wichita’s homeless. It is an honor to host this meeting and everyone is invited. The meeting starts at noon, we will open the doors at 11:30, serve food shortly after the presentation starting at approximately 12:45. Eastside Church of God is coming to help serve and prepare the food so we expect to have a full house.
This Sunday we continue the series on the Gospel of Luke. This week we look at the call of Jesus on our lives. This is a concept many don’t think about as much, but as we look at the message this weekend, we will certainly see the importance of all of us considering the call of God on our lives.
As usual the bulletin for the week is attached. There are a lot of things happening in the next month as we wind down the service of the evening shelter program. Pray for the ladies who will have no place to go, as well as the future plans of Mosaic in this ministry. If we had 10 churches designate $1,000 per month, we would have enough income to continue shelter services plus full-funding for the day program 365 days. There are differences in the services provided those we are honored to serve at Mosaic, all one has to do is come, ask for themselves, at any time, and they will quickly see a ministry that cares, and treats people like the prized possessions of God they are is needed.
Thanks again, for your willingness to read through, and pray for the ministry of Mosaic. We appreciate it and also offer our prayers for your group, or congregation. Just let us know, we promise, we have faithful men and women who will certainly pray for you and your church.
Blessings,
Pastor Mike

Christmas in February
While ministry is more often than not a challenge, let me assure you, it is never boring. At Mosaic our church seeks to build up and prepare those seeking to follow Jesus for ministry, in that we also perform ministry.
In the last weeks church has been an adventure, along with the ministry work we do such as the Wichita Women’s Overflow Shelter. In the last weeks, at church we have had the following happen, a drunk homeless man pass out and fall out of his chair, a schizophrenic woman speaking on numerous occasions out loud and speaking to the voices during church, and recently a homeless man threaten me and cuss me out because he wanted something to eat, during church. I have to wonder, how would other churches respond? What would they do?
The shelter also has its challenges. Tonight I had a short notice that we were going to have to start picking up the meals for the ladies. I will have to reschedule staffing, pay extra time for those who maybe can do this, or suddenly recruit volunteers. We have very few non homeless persons who attend Mosaic, not only does the church at large not understand this, but the general populace and service providers don’t either.
There is little understanding in today’s world as to what a missional church looks like. While that may not be the case for all, the reality is, very few, real mission minded churches exist. We send our money, or on occasion volunteer at the local soup kitchen and assume we are doing ministry. Let me ask, when people we are reaching out to choose to follow Jesus, what happens to them? Do we really understand the incarnation of Jesus Christ and all it implies to reach our world?
This Sunday at Mosaic we continue going through the book of Luke. Last week we spoke some about how it was that Zaharias had been praying for a son, yet in his prayers, he didn’t believe God would give him a son. It was one of the reasons he was stricken mute when the angel announced to him that he was going to be given what he had been praying for. Do we pray, yet don’t believe God will give us the things we pray for? This message to our congregation is an important one, but it is important for all of God’s people. Do we believe God will deliver what we pray for? The Gospel of Luke makes it clear, Mosiac, while far from perfect, is doing the things God calls the church to do. It isn’t just about us, it is about us growing closer to each other, and in our relationship with God so we can reach those he has called us to reach, especially the poor. I can’t change what the Bible says, and Luke makes it clear, it isn’t just the ‘poor in spirit’ it is ‘the poor.’
I don’t know what the future has for Mosaic; the building we were looking at was sold recently. I believe God provided a $400,000 property at a price of $42,500 but a church of primarily homeless people needs those who are a part of the larger church to come through and help. At some point, the church, and God’s people will come together to recognize the ministry God has called ‘the Church’ to. Many will experience the adventure, the excitement, and yes, at times, the heartbreak. We must realize that God is bigger than our desires, and our situation. We also have to understand the complexity of free-will. We as humans have the full capacity to do things outside of the will of God that impacts others. Many will have issues with this point of theology, but I challenge, there are things that happen every day outside of the will of God. The bible is clear about Gods ability to take that which was meant for evil and turn it around for good. Does that mean that we all experience good? I don’t think so, but for those seeking God, God knows, God cares and He ultimately gives peace and joy. On that note, seek and follow God and experience the peace and joy he has for you, no matter the situation or surroundings.
If receiving this via email the bulletin for this week is attached. Also note, this Sunday we will be hosting a Super Bowl Party starting at 3 PM until the completion of the Super Bowl, Bring snacks, drinks and refreshments to share with our friends who have nothing to bring. We also want to remind you that we will be looking at the Birth of Jesus this Sunday in our message, it will have a Christmas theme so come prepared and our discussion on Sunday starting at 9:30 will be on: ‘What was Jesus’ relationship with kids? What did He expect from youth? How did He choose friends as a kid?’ Church/teaching and worship starts at 10:30 shortly following the discussion time.
Please pray for our future, our needs, and those we are called to serve.

Mosaic Update, Christmas Wish Angel Tree News
Greetings, This week, at least for right now I am reminded of an old Larry Norman song that stated, ‘Christmastime is coming and the kids are getting greedy; It’s Christmastime. I know it stands for Santa Claus cause I seen it on the TV. It’s Christmastime. It used to be the birthday of the man who saved our necks, now it stands for Santa Claus you spell it with an X. It’s Christmastime.’ While I always enjoyed the song, I also understand Norman’s intent with satire and that the song was not meant to be a theological reflection. That said; it does seem that Christmas is more about commercialism than the celebration of Jesus’ birthday. Let me ask a question, if you could give Jesus a gift, what would you give him? What would he want? Let me challenge, much of what Mosaic is doing are the very things that would please Jesus on his birthday.

I was talking to a dear sister in Christ tonight from another church who told me of how her heart is in what Mosaic is doing. ‘Now is the right time Pastor Mike, we have to find a way to let others know. There needs to be people from other churches who support what is going on here.’ As we develop a new worship team, including 3 members who are currently homeless, and others take on and consider roles in teaching, we truly are representing the potential for the Kingdom of God, but we need your help to keep this ministry going. Some have been critical of a church like this in the past; we should according to them, ‘be self sufficient’ and on and on. Their emphasis is on finance as opposed to the work of God. Let me be clear, we are a part of the Body of Christ that consists of people from various denominations and faith systems, and we are all, as we support this ministry, a part of God’s work. I am not embarrassed that many call us a ‘Missional Church.’ I just happen to believe that all churches are called to carry out the mission of Christ.
The newsletter this week is a little different. I am asking those receiving it to consider supporting and contributing to help out Mosaic with our financial needs, if possible on a regular basis. There are possibilities to do more, and provide an ongoing service at a prime location in our city, but it won’t happen without help from those in other congregations and in other places. Let me ask again, what could you give Jesus this Christmas Season in recognition of his Birth? I challenge, few places provide the potential to have the impact, and please the savior as much as the work going on at Mosaic. I challenge you, if you don’t believe me, call me at 316-807-8034, let me show you first hand the work we are doing and introduce you to some of the people who have been touched by this ministry. I challenge, it will equal any foreign mission experience you will go through, and you will quickly see, God is at work in downtown Wichita through a little church called, Mosaic!

Now there is one other thing I want to make mention of and we need you to help with this. We have put together an Angel Tree to provide Christmas gifts to the homeless who are a part of our women’s shelter as well as the active homeless individuals who are a part of our church. We have numerous names and items on their lists as to some of the wants they have requested for Christmas. While there are plenty of places to eat, plenty of clothes and more essentials and needs available in the community, there are few that are providing wants and blessings, especially on Christmas Day. We told our ladies and church participants to write down a few things they wanted for Christmas and have those items on individual cards. Would you consider adopting an individual and buying them something for Christmas? The items actually vary from towels, to bus passes, and from gifts for a father’s child, to a pair of boots for an elderly lady who recently had a stroke. You can contact us, get the name of an individual, or pick out the individual to buy gifts for. We will place the gifts under our tree where on Christmas Day we are going to have a family celebration at church where we provide the homeless a Merry Christmas to celebrate the birth of our Savior. My wife and I have already adopted a couple of individuals, won’t you do the same?
In the meantime, thanks for reading, and God bless you this Christmas season.
Praying for you and appreciating your prayers for us.
Blessings,
Pastor Mike

Happy Thanksgiving and Touching The Least of These

Greetings on this Thanksgiving Day,
You know today is one of those days where many will sit back and reflect on the goodness of God in their lives. It is one of those days that as I sit here working the women’s homeless shelter we are now doing that I also realize there are those that while it may seem there is no reason to be thankful, in reality find ways to be thankful for the little things. Even the women staying at the shelter have found reason to be thankful, when I see that I can’t help but wonder, if a homeless woman, having no place to go on Thanksgiving Day can still be thankful, why can’t the rest of us?

This Sunday we will have a different kind of service, we will have a brief teaching time on, The Family of God, and then as a family we are going to decorate the church together. It is pot-luck Sunday so come prepared to share a meal and good time with each other as we get ready for the Holiday season. This Christmas we are undertaking a project as well that will provide ministry to the homeless of our city. We are doing a sort of angel tree where we will gather a few wants from the homeless women at the shelter we are operating as well as the active participants at church. We are then asking others in the community to adopt at least one person, and buy the few things on that persons list, or at least some of the things on that persons list. We will then as a family celebrate the goodness of God and the birth of our Savior on Christmas day. There are always the needs that are provided, clothing, food and so forth. But to approach the season for people in need and to provide them a few wants is something unique and something we want to do. If you, your church, or some other organization you are associated with would like to adopt a homeless individual to provide gifts to, please contact me and I will provide you the name of someone with some of the items on their gift list.

This coming Sunday during our time of discussion we will be continuing our series on getting to know Jesus as we discuss, Why does Jesus allow people to fake or misinterpret Christianity? The discussion times over the last few weeks have been wonderful times of discussion with upwards of 20 or more people attending at times. The discussions at times have been lively and they are set up in such a way, that little preparation, if any is needed and one can come and start up on any given week.
On a side note, and in closing, one of the things that has suffered to some extent with the start up of the evening shelter hours for women, is the day program. If you or anyone you know would be interested in helping with the day program, please contact me. Our desire is to have steady and regular volunteers who can operate a program which provides opportunities to work and serve the homeless. The program based on the Fountain House Model of Rehabilitation has set methods and procedures and training can be provided to help with this model. Many of the homeless as I have spoken to them have expressed the value of such a program which is unique for homeless persons, it is not per say a come and eat, just hang out program. It is instead a program that encourages people to participate in the needed work of the facility and with each other, in the meantime developing attitudes of self-worth and purpose. It is as people begin to believe in themselves again that ultimate rehabilitation for many can take place, and for others, a since of value can take place. If we can’t and don’t love ourselves, it makes it difficult to love others in the ways God desires for each of his children. You can learn more about this program model, originally designed for persons with mental illness, but much of which can be adapted for all homeless persons by viewing the following video:
To view the video, just click on the following link, if the video does not appear as it should, click the following link:

I especially would like to thank several groups who have been blessing us as of recent. Among those include the fine folks associated with 24/7 Life Ministries who has raised funds for our shelter program plus the purchase of 15 new cots which will better serve the ladies participating in the program. I would also like to publicly thank Kansasland Tires, located at 2904 S Spruce St. here in Wichita which also recently made a sizable donation to Mosaic. We are grateful for those who support the work we are engaged in.
Blessings to you, and hope to see you this weekend, and as always, for those receiving this via email the bulletin is attached.

Weekly Update for November 13, Hurt
Tonight, as last night, I listen to the cries of women at a shelter
Some sleep for the first time in a long time
Others can’t; there are nightmares
Whimpers
Tossing
And turning
To understand the pain is to understand the call
It is easy to turn away, ignore the pain
Pretending to care, but caring for self,
Pretending to love, but loving self
Is it they who are lost
Have we given our all?
To love is
To sacrifice
Care
Bare
Share one another’s pain
As we walk together
There it is again
Tossing and turning
Crying
Whimpers
They Dream of the pain they experience
Tomorrow
Some sleep for the first time in a long time
Others can’t; there are nightmares
Whimpers
Tossing
And turning
To understand the pain is to understand the call
It is easy to turn away, ignore the pain
Pretending to care, but caring for self,
Pretending to love, but loving self
Is it they who are lost
Have we given our all?
To love is
To sacrifice
Care
Bare
Share one another’s pain
As we walk together
There it is again
Tossing and turning
Crying
Whimpers
They Dream of the pain they experience
Tomorrow
This week as I prepared for my sermon I couldn’t help but think of my surroundings as I worked at the homeless shelter we are operating each night. I normally enjoy the time alone after everyone is asleep. I get to work with no distractions late at night, but tonight I couldn’t help but think of the words I wrote above. The pain individuals endure as a result of their environment. I realized how blessed I am, to understand in part and to be there and be a part of a church that is making a difference in the lives of others.
Tonight I also heard complaints about the homeless. There are always those who will complain, tonight they came from an unlikely source, a few employees at the Department of Corrections next door who don’t like the homeless and have made their opinions clear to others. There are those at the DOC who do like what we do though, they like it because they have seen us go out of our way to show concern by giving bottled water on a hot day when they can’t get into their offices. They have appreciated the fruit baskets we have delivered. Some have made referrals to the shelter or day program and have seen positive results. Yes there are the complaints, but they are always from those who don’t know.
There is another benefit of working and observing; the discovery of the amazing way God works. This week as I prepared for the sermon for the week, following the series, Finding Jesus in Contemporary Culture, I use as a point of reference the scripture Psalm 23, and Psalm 9:9. God cares for the hurting soul and as we are called to be imitators of God, we need to find that place where we care. There is the hope of eternal life that awaits each of those who are followers of Jesus, there is more than that though, there are ways to find joy, despite our pain, ways to find security in the arms of God, despite our circumstance. To reflect on that for me tonight, was a blessing as I realized; I also need the message of the Good Shepherd and a God who provides not only protection from the enemy, but the seclusion and fortitude that comes from being within the fortress of God.
Yeah, there are lessons to learn, things to experience, I only hope I can become the lover of souls that God has called me to. I pray God uses me to model the behavior to a congregation of people that comes from all walks of life. I pray that not just for me though, I pray that for us all.
As always, the bulletin is attached, and for those receiving this email via some other means other than email, feel free to contact us with your email address so we can include you in our email list. Visit our website at www.mosaicwichita.com and share the link with others as the site changes weekly.
There is so much happening at Mosaic and God is at work, be in prayer as He continues to move for the development of our worship team, youth ministry, and other things He would have us do.
Blessings to you, and hope to see you this weekend,
Pastor Mike

Weekly Update November 4

Greetings and blessings on this wonderful day, a friend who I went to college with and I still keep up with used to always take off on a local television show routine, “It’s a beautiful morning in KAKE Land!” Fen would say as they say each day from the television network KAKE here in Wichita. He would often remind me, no matter how tough the day, or the circumstance may seem to be, it was still a beautiful day if we looked for the beauty in the day.
As many know we are now doing the women’s homeless shelter and as a result have picked up some press and seen some beautiful things start to happen already. We have also seen some tough times and tough situations happen, but often times those people going through those tough times still find a way to see beauty. We have a lady who stayed at the program last night who is in town from Missouri where she lost everything in the Joplin Tornado from possessions, her home, and even her two best friends. She is trying to get to Colorado to take a job working with horses. Despite her difficulties, I have had a wonderful time speaking to her about the good things in life she sees and has experienced. I needed that last night as it was a tough night and there were also some issues that we had to deal with which was not the most enjoyable. I am grateful for the reminders and the places of which God has me to hear those reminders.
As many may or may not know, we now have the website up and going. The url for the site is www.mosaicwichita.com I am trying to make sure the web site is updated and information added each week. Check out the front page as there is some information posted there.
This week at Mosaic, for those on the Vision Team, please remember we are meeting at 12 Noon. We have some things to speak about and if possible to be there and you are on the team please try to make the meeting.

At Mosaic we want to grow, to grow, we need our members to invite others; we also need those who are involved in other churches to pray for us. We are a mission minded and oriented church because we believe God has called every church to mission. We are blessed to see fruit, for those praying, contributing, and supporting this ministry, thank you, the fruit we see and experience is your fruit, remember in that, for those who aren’t involved in missional ministry, God calls us to produce fruit.
Anyway, that is the update for the week, God is good, all the time, and all the time God is good.
Blessings and hope to see you on Sunday, and for those on the Vision Team, see you on Saturday.
Don’t forget the teaching time and discussion this Sunday at 9:30 on Why Jesus and Not Another. Also attached for those receiving this via email is this week’s bulletin.
Blessings to you, and hope to see you this weekend,
Pastor Mike

Weekly Update 10/30/11 Halloween Week

This week a lot is happening at Mosaic, of course that seems to be the norm. Let me just mention a few for this Halloween week.
Tomorrow the message at Mosaic will be part 2 of Discovering Jesus in Contemporary Culture. The theme of this week, following the Halloween theme is Finding Jesus in Horror. This will be a kind of kick off service of this format and you will see how a sermon comes about specifically from the television series, Dexter. While there may be those who are critical, I think most will be surprised.
This has been a busy week and weekend for me. Last week was the showing of my film The Long Walk at the Tallgrass Film Festival, I want to thank everyone who came out for the showing. On Monday morning I left for Tulsa to cover for Hollywood Jesus the film Home Run. While there I met representatives from various agencies including The Dove Foundation, Focus on the Family, and numerous others including John Baker, the creator of Celebrate Recovery. It was a blessing to get to be on the set of the film being made as well as spending time with others covering the film. The discussions with Mr. Baker were really quite interesting and the opportunity to visit a Celebrate Recovery meeting in Tulsa was quite enjoyable.
This week at Mosaic we start a new venture. Starting on Tuesday, November 1st we start providing overnight shelter services for homeless women. We still need 2 twin beds for the staff as we currently have cots for the women staying in the shelter. We are also in need of food for the shelter, including presweetened cereal, powdered milk, coffee, sugar, and other items for breakfast. We are also still in need of volunteers, especially women volunteers to help out on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Be in prayer as we provide these services.

I also want to remind everyone on the vision team, we will be meeting, next week at 12 Noon to discuss various plans and activities regarding growth and other agenda items.
Please help spread the word about Mosaic we need you, and we need to grow. We specifically continue to have needs with youth and worship so be in prayer regarding those things as we try to develop them and seek God’s wisdom and help in those areas. Also check out Mosaic’s new web site located at www.mosaicwichita.com
Until next week, God bless and don’t forget to check out the attached bulletin.
Blessings to you, and hope to see you this weekend,
Pastor Mike

Mosaic Weekly Update, 10/19
Greetings, this weeks Mosaic update is coming a little early due to a number of events that are happening this week, one of them, my commitment to the Tallgrass Film Festival which I cover for Hollywood Jesus and the showing of my own film at that festival. It is a busy few days for me as I cover Tallgrass through Sunday evening, then I leave for Tulsa Sunday Evening and return Tuesday night to cover the making of the feature film Home Run starring Vivica A. Fox and Scott Elrod and has as a point of focus, Celebrate Recovery a substance abuse recovery program like Alcoholics and Narcotics Anonymous except with a strong Christian Focus. I am excited about these things but we are also getting ready to launch the Overflow Women’s Shelter for homeless women.
In the process, I know, as I have heard through the grapevine, there are those critical of providing a service like this, despite the reality that it will provide needed income for 4 families including mine, and beyond that, at no cost to the church, we will provide services that no one else was willing to provide that will help keep women alive through the Winter. The reality is, very little of Mosaic’s money, and time from its members have been impacted by this ministry or our regular homeless outreaches which occur 5 days a week. I challenge for those who think it has, to show me where and how. The bottom line, God calls us to serve the poor. Many churches make excuses as to why they can’t do it, not Mosaic. We will follow Christ’s directives and we certainly cherish those who have come along with us to support this ministry. It is far from all we are, but it is a part of what we do in regards to fulfilling the call of Christ. We have 3 staff that starts training on Thursday and Friday, and we open up our doors from 6 PM – 7 AM starting November 1 and concluding on April 1. Please be in prayer that as this program starts that God would be glorified and Mosaic will be blessed for its efforts.
For overflow staff and volunteers:
2 twin beds and bedding
A dresser
A good working dryer to help treat clothing and bedding for potential bed bugs
And food donations such as coffee, breakfast items, (note on breakfast items we want presweetened cereals, preferably, in the self serve containers where the cereal is prepackaged in a bowl), creamer, sugar, sugar substitute, coffee cups, bottled water, etc. Any other food item or snacks would also be appreciated. So far Mosaic has spent very little money of its own on items for the homeless program, (estimated $200 or less). We are so grateful to those who have donated in the past. Your support has provided ample opportunities of ministry. We could use more volunteers, especially through the winter, through the day and evening hours. We hope to have the property open as much as possible through the day to provide a place to get out of the weather. Currently myself, and Kim who have been here through the day for the day program, will be working in the evening program which will limit to some extent our day to day operations.
Our staff for the program consists of the following: Myself who will be directing the program and providing coverage, Virginia Aurora who will provide part-time emergency coverage , Kim Pargas ongoing staff coverage, and Lisa Dimmitt, ongoing staff coverage. We also are looking for additional volunteers who can help out and make a difference in the life of a homeless lady.

Then on Halloween Night, October 31, The Fox, 104.5 will be hosting a Classic Rock, Classic Horror movie night in College Hill at The Forum Theater, located on Hillside and Douglas in the Old Baptist Church. There is a suggestion donation of $10.45 of which all proceeds go to benefit Mosaic. The films are Halloween, The Shining, and The Exorcist. We are grateful for this benefit and especially the attention it will bring to Mosaic. Check out the attached bulletin for the remainder of announcements.
Remember, our teaching and discussion time starts at 9:30 on Sunday. We have had good attendance as we discuss questions individuals asked regarding getting to know Jesus. This week we explore the question of did Jesus have siblings? We start a new teaching series for church at 10:30. The series is Discovering Jesus in Contemporary Culture. This week the focus is on Why We Look at The Culture. I look forward to this series and the upcoming events during the Holiday period. I am also looking forward to the first of the year where we will start a new series by going through a book in the Bible.
I hope all of you have a great week, keep us in prayer and if there are things you would like us to pray for let us know.
