At Mosaic We Need You To Make A Difference

During the holiday season there are many ways you can help Mosaic. We are a church of primarily homeless individuals and a few others. Mosaic is unique, different, and effective. One of the things we do and have received international recognition for is our work for Wichita’s homeless. A few churches have helped us financially and/or with food contributions, we are grateful for those. Contributions of food and finance are always appreciated. Starting last Christmas we started doing a Christmas Angel Tree. Mosaics needy take a card and place up to 3 items on it.  The card is then placed on our Christmas tree. People can then adopt someone from the cards to provide Christmas gifts for. Last year we had 47 names on our Angel Tree and provided gifts to over 50 more. Without the help of others, like you, this wouldn’t be possible.

We try to provide at least one item for each person for each wish list. It is also appreciated when possible to give more than one item from the list. Your generosity gives many of those on the streets something to look forward to. We ask each person what they want, not what they need. Many are surprised at the simplicity of the requests.

It is great if you are able to adopt specific individuals. We also appreciate those who make financial contributions to purchase gifts. 100% of what is donated for gifts is used to purchase gifts. We ask that presents be wrapped with the person’s name on the gift. We will give the presents out at our Celebration Saturday Christmas Service on December 29. If purchasing a gift and you would like to be present to give the gift, you are more than welcome to do so.

We appreciate your kindness and willingness to bless others who do without. We also appreciate your willingness to share our needs with others, whether one of our special projects or ongoing financial needs that allow us to continue this ministry.  We receive no financial help from Federal, State, or City sources; neither do we receive Food Bank assistance. We have no paid staff and contributions allow us to operate our day program which provides meals to the homeless a minimum of 6 days a week, sometimes twice a day plus extended hours for our day program and some shelter services. Our current operational costs run approximately $1,750 per month. We provide services to upwards of 500 homeless units a week (some persons come each day and we have upwards of 200 on certain days. All contributions are greatly appreciated and needed. Understand, we currently have no salaried staff. Your contributions make a drastic difference. We will state, it is our hope to someday have paid staff and programs where we can hire the homeless and provide long term shelter to those active at Mosaic. That day just hasn’t come yet. Our experience and example clearly show our first obligation is to provide the ministry we do.

The following represents some of the cards for our Angel Tree. We will likely have 50 or more cards and a total attendance for our Christmas Celebration Service of 125 or more. We try to provide a gift to everyone that attends which includes some children. If willing to adopt someone, please contact us so we don’t duplicate gifts. For further information please contact us at 316-807-8034 and leave a message if necessary. Also financial contributions made out to Mosaic Church can be sent to 6441 N. Hydraulic, Park City KS, 67219. I use my address to make it more efficient to get gifts as soon as possible. All contributions to Mosaic are tax-deductible as we are a 501 C3 nonprofit organization. Individuals can also give online to Mosaic by visiting www.mosaicwichita.com and visiting the donations page.

Our goal this year for our year end solicitation is to generate, 150 Gifts for Christmas. $21,000 Operational Funds (provides the costs of operation, includes $0 for salaries, any staffing costs will come from contributions of those attending Mosaic.)  While this seems like a lot of money, compared to other agencies receiving outside contributions, or via Federal, State, or City Contracts, Insurance dollars and so forth, this is minimal. There are many directors and/or pastors of nonprofit organizations which bring in salaries up to 5 times or more of this amount. While an ambitious goal, every person or organization supporting us as they can, can make a significant difference. You can give your contribution all at once or on a weekly or monthly basis.  We are grateful and if you want you want to see the difference we are making for yourself, we encourage you to give us a call, set up a visit and a face to face meeting.

Jesus said that what we have done for the least of these, we have done unto him. Will you bless and help those God has called us all to minister to, ‘The Least of These?’

Mosaic Wichita, Weekly Update

Greetings and blessings to each of you,

Thankfully some of the things have begin to wind down at Mosaic after the completion of our Bikers for the Homeless, To Benefit Mosaic, Tougher Than Hell Motorcycle Rally. If you didn’t catch the story in the Wichita Eagle on the story, check out the following link:

http://www.kansas.com/2012/07/30/2427286/motorcyclists-rally-to-benefit.html#storylink=newsletter

In regards to numbers, for a first year, it wasn’t too bad, we hope to grow it next year and already have an experienced volunteer in motorcycle rallies to help organize and plan the event. In regards to media coverage it was quite successful. We had 2 television stations on site covering the event as well as The Wichita Eagle. Individuals unable to attend can still contribute to the cause and help out. You can visit www.mosaicwichita.com to send online donations, you can also mail them to P.O. Box 47261, Wichita, KS 67201. We also have a limited number of t-shirts available. You can purchase them either at Mosaic or via email. If picking up in person, we will sell the shirts for $10 each, if purchasing online we are asking $15 which will include postage and handling. Again, they are available in limited numbers.

I am also working already on our next fundraiser to be held from December 6-9. That event will draw upon various individuals from Mosaic, The Homeless Community, Celebrities, and various actors/actresses from the area as we present, An Old Fashioned Radio Show Christmas. This program will present replications of 3 Holiday Themed Old Time Radio Shows. We already have some of Wichita’s top actors volunteering for this benefit which will also include dinner, more on this event to come and if interested, please let us know.

This Sunday I conclude the series of Lessons from Vacation. The service and discussion on Sunday will start at 10:30 AM, we will have a discussion time from 9:30 AM – 10:15. I strongly encourage folks to come as we look at a church in Johnson City Tennessee that has replicated a successful formula for a church that blends the community and the homeless, with a larger than normal homeless population. There were certain things about this church which made it obvious to me that we need to work on if we are to make it.

It has been a wonderful week so far and I am looking forward to tonight’s men’s gathering starting at 6 PM. As usual, the bulletin is attached, and I hope to see as many as possible this week. For those at other churches, we could use your prayers. I would also like to meet with each of you, as pastors or lay people individually to discuss how you can help and we can partner together in this ministry which God has called us to. We are also grateful that Hope Community Church will be feeding this coming Saturday and we encourage as many as possible to come take part of that work together.

Thanks and again, God’s blessings,

Mike

Mosaic Update, Urgent Prayer Needs

Greetings this week from Mosaic. A lot is going on and today in particular I am requesting everyone to spend some time in prayer as I share some needs.

As you may or may not know we have had some issues with our landlord, it has been a good situation for us, but there are still issues. As of yet they have yet to pay for various things that need to be repaired and we are going to have to pay for those items and then reduce the cost from our rent payments.

1st we have had 2 attempted break-ins to Mosaic, the back door estimate to fix at this point in time is approximately $1,500

2nd, last Sunday while going into church we noticed our air conditioning was not working. Initial estimates indicate rather expensive repairs. We have 3 units, none of them are working, thus no air, and likely no heat until the repair. It could cost as much as $1,500 each to repair.

3rd This next Sunday, Sunday July 29 is the Bikers for the Homeless to Benefit Mosaic Tougher Than Hell Rally. We have had confirmation from one group from Dothan Alabama who is attending the festival. We hope to finish the details for the rally this week, and hopefully have a ton of riders showing up. We have ordered 144 t-shirts and hope to sell out of those shirts to raise additional funds for Mosaic.

We are a small congregation, last week, we were 95% homeless in attendance, the truth is, we don’t have a lot of funds that come into Mosaic. We could use prayers for one of several things this week:

1st Finances, that God continues to provide. We have up to this point, thankfully always taken care of our obligations and needs. This hit is huge for us.

2nd Laborers and Volunteers who could help with our needs. It is possible that there are those who could donate goods and services to fix what we need, as far as we are concerned that is as good as money.

3rd New members, we need new members, not just the homeless but especially those who would look at becoming a part of Mosaic and being serious about their commitment. If coming from another body, we would request involving us and your pastor or church family in those discussions to insure that a good transfer takes place and the ongoing spiritual needs you have are met either by Mosaic, or your current church who would more or less be sending you to a mission church.

4th Wisdom, that God would give us wisdom in the areas we need wisdom, growth, a new permanent location that is ours, etc…

This week I met with a local leader who told me, “Mike you are the person God is calling to bring the church together to support Mosaic. Wichita needs your church as no other is doing what you are doing.” This individual, I can’t share their name as of yet and I spoke for some time. I don’t know how I feel about the comment and expressed as much to him and he told me that there would be things I had to do that were uncomfortable but it didn’t change the reality that Wichita needed Mosaic. I will be contacting some pastors this week and getting with them regarding the need to according to him share:

1) My story, 2) Why Mosaic 3) The vision, short term and long term for Mosaic

You can also pray about those things.

This week’s message is a continuation of Lessons from the Vacation, When God Calls. I have already had a request from individuals to video the message so could use some help in videoing it to post on the internet. It is a message where God has spoken to me about my need in this area, it is why I think I will likely be a little more passionate than at other times, it covers issues related to my relationship to God, and listening to His call that I need to heed and listen to.

A lot going on, we need you, we appreciate the prayers and actions to assist us, more so this time in our time of need which we don’t typically endure.

On the good news side, I have had 3 individuals outside of Mosaic also contact me regarding their desire to do Final Friday at Mosaic. I am kind of stuck in the place now of organizing all of this since I have not heard from a person who volunteered to do it. I could use some help in helping out and organizing and coordinating these events that the community, as I expected, has heard about and are now contacting us to present their art at our church.

Thanks and again, God’s blessings,

Mike

Mosaic Pastor on Vacation, The Body Stepping Up

Greetings to all of those on the Mosaic mailing list,

This will likely be the last email from me for the next couple of weeks as I am getting ready to leave on vacation with my family tomorrow morning bright and early. I am looking forward to, and in need of time away to relax and recoup. I am not so positive it is a great thing in some regards as the area I am going to has in the past presented problems for me as it rekindles much of my past. I am also in the position of dealing with some family issue that has been really difficult as of late. I may share more about this later, but it has all happened so fast and so recent we are really trying to do all we can to hold it together at the moment, while at the same time, seeking wisdom and direction.

Now the purpose of this letter is more of a housekeeping thing as we need each of you, that are a part of Mosaic to come through, for those not a part of Mosaic but pray for us, keep reading, there is likely some things you can still help out with, and Lord knows, I need it right now.

As I have stated in the past, currently I am overwhelmed and need a break. I am not sure the trip to Tennessee is the best, but out of the love and respect for my wife who wants to visit her family, some of which are quite old now, I am making it out of respect and love for her. That said, there are some things you need to be aware of, some things that need to be done in my absence, and some things you can likely do to lighten the load.

First is some housekeeping things and I mean literally housekeeping things. As of recent with the low numbers in the day program we need people to get in early to help pick up, take out the trash, vacuum, and those types of things. This can also be done by each group in their respective space during those times after church service or use of the facility.

Next help with promotions and help for the Bikers For The Homeless Rally. We need several things here.

1) As of yet while some have expressed an interest in vending, non one has officially filled out the paperwork for vending. That must be done within 14 days of the event, or the group simply won’t be allowed to vend either their items, food etc… I am also requesting help here to try and identify vendors for the event. I have spent a great deal of time here, but so far, with limited results, I have also contacted two individuals to help with this, but so far, no results or really any reply.

2) We still need help passing out flyers and information to local locations promoting the event. I am leaving forms here, but am also attaching forms to this email. Please, pass out, distribute, more as you can.

3) We still need donations of items, coupons, whatever for door prizes. We want to encourage people to come.

4) There is a bikers rally in Cassoday the 1st Sunday of the Month, another in Potwin the 2nd Sunday of the month. We need someone to help distribute flyers to these events.

Another area that I need is coverage for the pulpit on July 8. I have spoken to several individuals, one of which gave a maybe and hasn’t confirmed as of yet, and two others that are out of town and have other obligations. I am pretty particular as to who fills the pulpit in my absence, but that said, I know others outside of Mosaic may either know someone, or, be able to help out themselves. Please contact me. Now I had someone the other day say that they wouldn’t be able to reach me during my vacation time, a reminder here of a couple of nifty gadgets in today’s world, cell phones, and the internet. While I may be difficult to reach at times, such as when I am rafting down a class 4 white water river, there is also this thing called answering machines or call notes. Leave a message, and I will be able to call you back or get you in the limited times I may be online.

I also want to remind folks, we try to feed on the first and last Saturday of each month as well as try to have things available for the homeless that come to church on Sunday. It may be something as simple as a sandwich, water, and/or chips, but it is something that folks will appreciate. We need folks to help carry this out though, by bringing, getting donated or preparing food, and of course, serving it.

The only other thing to mention is the need for someone to coordinate, and follow through with Final Friday for the church. I am in a bind as these events have been scheduled, but I really need follow through with this in the promotion of the events, and the coverage of the events. I do have artists now contacting me about coming to display their work. It would be a shame to not offer these folks the benefit of displaying their art work, which in essence also brings in potentially new people to Mosaic.

That’s about it other than I really appreciate your prayers over the next couple of weeks. I imagine there will be some tough time, but I also know there will be some good times. I appreciate how our body has come together and will continue to do so, Mosaic is made up of good folk. Appreciate your prayers and hope to see you soon.

Blessings,

Mike

Please pray for our future, our needs, and those we are called to serve

Mosaic Update, Friendship, Hosea, Bible Study

Weekly greetings to all of those who are either a part of or supportive of Mosaic,

So far this has been an interesting, albeit, not always fun week. I have been reminded of this thing we call ‘friendship’ and what that concept of being a friend means. If anything I am convinced of this, we as humans don’t do a very good job at either being a friend, or having friends. That isn’t to say we can’t do it, or shouldn’t try, but it isn’t easy. I am grateful though for one true friend I have who will never leave me, forsake me, or as the old song reminds me: “I’ve got a friend in Jesus.”

Now a few reminders for the week: First on Saturday we are having a Vision Team Meeting from 11 AM – 12:30. We are not feeding this week so will be able to spend time in discussions on various issues, from a building fund and committee (we have a property we can look at as early as next week), as well as committees for Fundraising, Public Awareness, Communion and so forth. Those on the committee should have received notice about this earlier in the week.

On Sunday we are completing our Study of Hosea. Let me say this, I was talking to Mary Jane about this yesterday, there are events that happen in the lives of people that I have no control over, there are at least 4 families I have dealt with in one way or another this week, that said, neither do I have control as to the relevance of the message in regards to events in ones life.  I have said it before, it is amazing how God has certain messages in place that coincide with the events going on in the lives of those in the Body of Christ. I am certain, there are components of this weeks message that we all, (including me) need to head to, apply and understand for our lives in regards to our walk with God.

I also want to give fair warning and advance, on Sunday, June 24, we will be having our service at Hope Community Church, a sister church as they celebrate Biker Sunday. They are graciously providing a van to help transport folks from and back to Mosaic. Again, this is not this week, but next week.

I also want to say; while the bulletins are attached for those getting this via email, there is an announcement I want folks to take into consideration and start making plans for. For some time we have wanted to do more in the area of teaching in regards to our relationship with Jesus. Jenni Buckmaster has for some time been participating in a women’s bible study at Hope Community Church on Wednesday nights, we have some that have also participated in a Bible study with Ruth and Gunther on Thursday nights. We are now advocating that the women of Mosaic consider participation in the Bible Study at Hope on Wednesday nights from 6 – 8 PM. If interested in more details see Jenni about this. I know Mary Jane is looking forward to this, but we want to encourage more. We will also be starting a Bible Study and Growth Group for Men on Wednesday Nights at Mosaic from 6 – 8 PM. This will allow the women to participate together, as well as the men to meet at the church. Let me challenge, the growth of the body is critical, and while outside groups are supported, the growth of the body is something we should work on together. We would even welcome other study groups to use our facility to invite others to; of course all of this including anyone who may want to participate, including our homeless friends. I am looking forward to this. One note regarding the men’s group is as follows:  Mary Jane and I are on vacation the first 2 weeks of July as we visit Tennessee. I am recommending that this next Wednesday, we, the men, get together for a social time, maybe even a cook out at the church. We will officially start our meeting times on July 18. We will discuss the up coming weeks and times together this Wednesday, June 20. The Men’s Study will be on Being a Godly Man. Again, everyone is welcome to these groups, whether one of those who have been coming to Mosaic, thinking about it, or even if at another church who would like to plug into the Mosaic Family, even though you may be a part of another body.

This week, prepare for church; invite family, friends, and others you have been thinking about. Be in prayer for the body and the upcoming event Bikers for the Homeless to Benefit Mosaic Tougher than Hell Rally. In regards to prayer, I want to also let folks know that former church plant pastor, and Pastor Matt Lowe has accepted a position in Shreveport Louisiana as a youth pastor. Pray that God will bless Matt, Rebecca and family and especially that God sends a buyer for Matt’s house here in Wichita.

Now in closing, understand if you want to be on the churches email list, simply email us at mikefurches@yahoo.com and I will place you on the Mosaic mailing list.

Appreciate your prayers and hope to see you soon.

Blessings,

Mike

Mosaic Update, Hosea, Sin Consequence

Are you ready for the summer? I can already tell it is going to be a busy one where Mosaic will be doing a number of things. Make sure to check your bulletin which is attached if you have received this via email. If you want to be on our email list, simply email me at mikefurches@yahoo.com and I will gladly place you on our list.

As to the events going on, it all starts on Friday night, starting at 6 PM as we host a Final Friday Art Exhibit at the church. We will have two artists with their work on display and refreshments will be available. We are also looking for future artists to display their work in the future. We will be involved in other things including this Saturday, a Vision Team Meeting at 11AM until 12:30 PM. We also could use some folks to help us feed this Saturday as this Saturday and next Saturday is our feeding times and we don’t have anyone to provide these services. We will have sandwiches and other simple things to feed. I have a board meeting Saturday morning to attend for Novus Orsa, then our Vision Team Meeting at 11 and then a friend from Texas who has supported The Virtual Pew who I will be having lunch with. So any additional help will be great. Also coming up this weekend is The Vision Team Memorial Day Get Together. We will be cooking out and having a good time. Then don’t forget that on Saturday June 2 we will be having a BBQ at my house with my own BBQ recipe. I will smoke a Brisket and some Pork Ribs plus have some of my sauce available. We will be asking folks to bring sides. I will start smoking the meat early in the day, and we will start serving at 5:15 – 5:30 PM. For those that want, we will be going to The Wichita Wild Arena football game after we eat; game starts at 7:05 PM. This will be a great opportunity to bring friends, and even if not going to the football game, one can still come for a good time with food and fellowship. You can also check the other events in the bulletin including Biker Sunday at Hope Community Church on the last Sunday in June, and our own, Bikers for the Homeless to Benefit Mosaic, Tougher Than Hell Rally the last Sunday in July. We have already had various vendors and others talking about this event and volunteering to help out.

This Sunday we continue with part 3 of our study of Hosea. We will be approaching a sensitive subject for many, sin. I think sometimes we forget, there are consequences for sin and this weeks time will let us know some of those consequences. This last Sunday, the attendance was down quite a bit, please help spread the word and it is always great to see folks at Mosaic for our Sunday Morning services starting with a testimony/discussion time at 9:30 and church starting at 10:30. Hope to see you this week, and if not, I pray that God blesses you in an abundant way.

Mosaic Update Week of May 20

As some will appreciate, it will be a rather short update this week. I have been busy in a number of things this week, from having dinner with one of our churches families this week, I explored potential new ministries for the future with others, prepared the sermon for the week continuing the series on Hosea, plus making plans and contacts for the Bikers Rally for The Homeless to Benefit Mosaic in July. I am also contemplating my vacation in July and trying to make that a working vacation on my way to and from Tennessee/North Carolina/South Carolina with my family. Whew! Did I also mention I am contemplating leaving a day early and taking that vacation trip on my motorcycle while my family drives cars?

You know sometimes life can get busy, it can be difficult. There have been moments this week it has been that way for me. From dealing with conflict I didn’t want as some question Mosaic’s emphasis on the poor and then having a friend get upset at me, for who knows what. Funny how that type of thing happens isn’t it? One moment life is fine, you are singing the praises of a friend, and then, without notice, they get upset at you. I have to admit, I am still trying to figure this thing called life out. The other truth is, it isn’t always easy just because I follow Jesus. Neither will it be for you. I challenge, church is the place where we can be there for each other, to help each other out, pray for each other, and sometimes, just have someone there who understands. Many call church extended family, others like me, have learned, it is more than ‘extended’ family, it is in reality, ‘FAMILY!’ There are those in our community that need Mosaic, and as surely as we go through tough times, we will discover times where others are there for us, God has a way, of putting the right people, in the right place, at the right time. It is not that God don’t care, sometimes, we are not in the right place where God is working. I have recognized issues with many churches in the past, that is natural, but as messed up as the church is, she is still the bride of Christ and He loves her. It is still the place where we can experience the love of God. We can be at that place where we can interact with FAMILY, and share in the worship experience, learning together, about this thing called Christianity or walking with God.

Mosaic isn’t a perfect church, but I am honored to serve at what I consider a good church. I am honored to have those in our small body I call brothers and sisters. I am convinced we are doing a good thing for the Kingdom of God. I hope to share that experience with others including those who don’t have a church. We want you, truth is, and we need you. If not in a church, give us a try, if God is leading you to our church from another church; speak to us and your current pastor about if God would have you at Mosaic. Otherwise, we appreciate your prayers, and we would love to pray for you and your church.

Now in closing, understand if you want to be on the churches email list, simply email us at mikefurches@yahoo.com and I will place you on the Mosaic mailing list.

Appreciate your prayers and hope to see you soon.

Blessings,

Mike

Mosaic Update, Bikers Rally, Drive In Movies and More

This Friday night we are excited as some of us are going to the Drive In Movies here in Wichita. We will be leaving the church around 8:30 or 30 minutes prior to sunset. There are folks going where others can ride along and it is $10 per car load. We will then follow up with a Vision Team Meeting on Saturday from 11AM – 12:30 Pm where we will be discussing a number of things related to Mosaic and the church. Then of course there is Mother’s Day and the celebration of church on Sunday. Also I just want to remind everyone to plan something special for their wives or moms for this day.

We are not feeding this Saturday at Mosaic so we want to let folks know that, we are as of now feeding on the 1st and last Saturday of each month. We currently need groups and volunteers to help out with this. We have been averaging around 75 per feeding over the last weeks. This is a good project for a church, youth group, business group or others. We don’t feed on the other weeks due to others in the community doing things at Naked Lady Park. We have opened up our facility for them to use in the past but no one is taking advantage of that offer at this time.

There are a number of things happening in the future to be aware of. The biggies at this point are outlined in the bulletin. There is a possibility of changing the date of the men’s retreat so some of us can participate in Hope’s Biker Sunday. We are planning our own Biker’s for the Homeless to Benefit Mosaic on the last Sunday in July. Gerry McCan from Hope Community Church will be heading up our service on that particular Sunday and we anticipate having upwards of over 100 motorcycles here on that particular Sunday.

Please continue to keep Mosaic in prayer as we look at the possibility and need to transition. Bottom line is we need people to be committed. In the last weeks we have had a few folks commit to the church and that is good, one wants to work in theater and the arts and another wanting to work in helping with Final Friday’s.

Appreciate your prayers and hope to see you soon.

Blessings,

Mike

Please pray for our future, our needs, and those we are called to serve.

Mosaic Wichita News & The Hunger Games

Greetings to all of our Mosaic family and friends.

I don’t know about all of you, but what a busy week, and for some of us, what a busy weekend is ahead of us.

It has been a great week for the Furches family despite Mary Jane having a molar tooth pulled on Thursday. We were blessed to go hear friend Gerry McCann from Hope Community Church perform at a local eating establishment on Tuesday night, Ben and Luigis on North Woodlawn. What a blessed time it was and we actually had a lot of fun. If ever having the chance to hear Gerry, do so, also please support this eating establishment as they are a Christian family doing a great deal of wonderful ministry in the area.

One of the things I discussed with Gerry is the possibility of doing a Bikers to Benefit the Homeless and Mosaic outreach in July. Gerry explained to me that he thought we could get at least 100 bikers to attend and so we are now planning for July the event that can bring awareness to the homeless ministries Mosaic is doing as well as hopefully raise some much needed funds. Gerry will be performing for our service and for all of you old rock n rollers out there, especially those liking some of the classic Contemporary Christian Music; you are going to have a great time. I have also had other bands and people contact me about helping out, who knows, this may end up being a most of the day event. Be in prayer about that as I am excited but it will make for a busy July as I will also be taking a vacation with my wife and children to Tennessee for the first part of July.

Mosaic is also getting ready for homeless feedings both this weekend and next weekend. We will be feeding on Saturday and Sunday after church. While the attendance has been down the last couple of weeks, we hope to pick back up again with all of those a regular part of Mosaic and those we are reaching out to, especially the homeless. We could use some help this weekend for the feeding as we will need to prepare food and serve those taking advantage of our ministry. We will be at church to get everything ready on Saturday at 11:AM, we will start feeding at noon. On Sunday we will also be giving out backpacks to the homeless at church that need them thanks to a kind donation from a local family. Next week we will have a Women’s Bible Study Group from Hope Community Church helping out and serving the meal on Saturday. We are so grateful for all of the groups that help share in this ministry. We need to remember, it is time the churches came together and supported each other out in the ministry of the Kingdom.

I also want to remind folks that we will be hosting a meeting with Mayor Brewer on Monday morning along with other advocates for the homeless from the city of Wichita. That meeting starts at 7:45 AM. We will provide refreshments and coffee for that meeting. Any help with serving for this meeting would also be greatly appreciated as we explore the possibility of Mosaic being used for additional shelter for youth. We are in the exploration phase of that at this point and are just honored to host again, city leaders and the Mayor at this meeting.

Make sure to check out the bulletin, there are various events coming up ranging from a men’s retreat to Palo Duro Canyon in Amarillo Texas in June, The Drive in Movies, a Cook-Out, Arena Football and more. We want to do things as a family in coming together; we want you to be a part of that. Also, please remember, if transportation or costs is ever an issue, let us know, we will do what we can to help folks out. We also appreciate the help from those who assist in making it possible for the homeless to participate in family and body events through your kind contributions to Mosaic.

This Sunday’s service will be quite unique as we look at lessons from the movies and books Battle Royale and The Hunger Games. Most of you are likely aware of these two movies and their success around the world right now. This will be an interesting message, with numerous videos and even a little music from various sources. I am looking forward to it and if you are a fan of either Battle Royale or The Hunger Games, you will likely enjoy and get something out off this. If you aren’t you will get something out of it for sure that will better help you understand today’s society, issues, problems and solutions.

There is also attached a letter for you to review and pray about regarding the Wichita Police Departments proposed HOT Program that has been presented at Mosaic. I encourage each person to write a letter of support of your own, but we as a body will be voting on this letter of support next week so I can get that to Officer Nathan Schwiethale who is heading up this program. We also encourage other churches, business and civic groups to support this program. If interested in having the program presented at your group, please let me know and I will provide the contact information.

That will about cover it for now, thanks for your time, and we hope to see you this Sunday at Mosaic.

Blessings to you and may God bless you in your faithfulness to His Call.

Mosaic Church Weekly Update Easter Sunday

This Sunday at Mosaic, we incorporate ministry life with church life because our church life is representative of the ministry we do. This Sunday at 216 S. Market a little church named Mosaic will have Easter Services that challenge followers of Jesus to do more than just come to church and celebrate themselves, but to challenge followers of Jesus to come together to do the things Jesus came to earth for, and ultimately resurrected for. There are commands that Jesus made after the resurrection that I think to ignore would in reality devalue the purpose of the cross. So many churches this week will have guests, so many of those guests will attend church a few times a year because they don’t see the church practicing what they are called to practice. Each and every follower of Jesus, each and every church is called to do ministry, and at that, specific ministry. At Mosaic we have taken those commands seriously because we realize we serve a savior who gave his all for us, in a loving relationship we also realize that we want to serve the one who first loved us, not because we have to, but because we want to. This weekend, many of those we have reached out to, those who are poor and homeless will celebrate the Resurrection with us.

One of the things that makes us different is that we are largely made up of those who are homeless and while there are other churches, groups, and individuals who reach out to them, we recognize that they are a part of our congregation, we don’t separate them, we don’t set them aside or serve them once or twice a week, we serve everyday and we have recognized there is a difference of ‘doing ministry for’ and ‘becoming a part of.’ We practice what we talk, and have done what we say. This Sunday, we celebrate together this thing called family with people we know Jesus spent time with, and ultimately, commanded to love. While there will be some who take issue with what I say next I pray you receive it in a good way, but I have no problem promoting Mosaic because I know at Mosaic you see Jesus and his work in action, people at Mosaic on Easter Sunday will see those Jesus has called his followers to serve and love, because they are a part of us.

If you are looking for a church, I would invite you to try out Mosaic, come see for yourself.

Mosaic Update, Approaching Easter

As I write this, this morning, I can’t help but wonder, are there those who are really so spiritual that they don’t need to observe certain holidays? What I mean is in reference to those who say things like ‘we should celebrate Christmas, or Easter’ every day!’ While there is a measure of truth in those statements, I can’t help but know my own life, I need at times those reminders and as we approach Easter this year, there are reminders all around me as to the concepts of death, and rebirth, reminders as to the continuing and working power of the Holy Spirit in the lives of those he loves and cares for. For me, I need the reminders and find them worthwhile. To spend time focusing this year on the sacrifice but ultimately the rebirth and newness of life exemplified in the resurrection of Jesus is a reminder that those things can be, and are, available for not just me, but those who follow after the Son of God.

There are presently two events in my life that remind me of this which I can look at as examples of how God continues to resurrect the dead. One is a personal family issue our family has been dealing with for some time. I am reluctant to say that resurrection has occurred but I continue to have hope it is occurring in the life of a loved one. I continue to pray, this Sunday as I teach on Luke 15, including the story of the Prodigal Son, that hope is exemplified even more than usual.

Another situation is the closing of our women’s shelter. This Sunday morning will be the last morning of operation for our shelter. I am concerned for the women who will no longer have any place to go. I am concerned over a many people who say they follow Jesus yet, either seem to not care, or don’t take into consideration these types of things. The ladies at Mosaic (as I call them) are handling the situation better than I, but they still have skepticism and many have come out and told me how much they appreciated what we have done. For them, it is a new start, one that includes the death of a program and the hope of a better tomorrow.

This Sunday in recognition of the little church that could (Mosaic) and those who have been a part of the program we are going to be cooking out for the ladies, a guest of their discretion, or their families, and those attending church on Sunday. This is a way I believe I can give a little back to those who have participated in the shelter. The cook-out will be for those attending church, and the ladies of the shelter plus one guest or their families.

As the shelter starts to end, I will take some time to take off, only to recoup and move to starting up our day program again on April 10. This program will operate 3 days a week, plus we will move to having meals again on the 1st and last Saturday of each month starting after April 10. We will have a small group from Eastside Church of God here this Saturday at 11:30 to assist with feeding the homeless. We will start the regular rotation after April 10. In this new venture we need volunteers to assist through the week and on weekends. We have already heard this is something many homeless are looking forward to.

I am also excited about the redirection of my own efforts in the next weeks, including instituting some programs to help with the Spiritual Growth of those committed to Mosaic, and ministry to those in the community including the institution of a Celebrate Recovery Group to meet during the day in the downtown area.

A lot is happening, a lot that symbolizes death and rebirth, all of this as we move closer to Easter Week. Remember, God is good All The Time, and All The Time, God is good.

Mosaic Weekly Update The End of a Service

It has been said before, ‘all good things must come to an end.’ I have to ask though, do they really?

As many know Mosaic has offered and provided a shelter for women since November 1, 7 days a week, each evening from 6 PM – 7 AM. That has included meals each evening and morning for the ladies staying at our shelter, and with 4 staff persons, 3 for the duration of the program, and numerous staff and with a large number of women, some 10-13 a night on average, we have seen a lot of things take place, from some ladies who have gotten their lives back together complete with jobs and housing, to the tragedies such as loosing a baby shared with others. While it has certainly been an enjoyable ride, it has also had its hardships. I recall the worst part of having to turn down services to women with small children each day during the weeks leading up to Christmas, and the reality that after the morning of April 1, many women will once again, in our city, be back on the streets on a nightly basis. There have been personal benefits though, it has been a joy to have a small income for myself from working at the shelter, plus knowing that others also obtained an income. On the whole, I have learned to appreciate the plight of many of the homeless women in Wichita, I also realize the need for continued services. How we as a church, as small as we are can do that is beyond my reasoning and understanding at the moment.

The truth is, I will challenge most any other church, not from the perspective of bragging but to legitimately challenge the church to be the Body of Christ to the poor as Scripture mandates, to do as much with what they have, as Mosaic has done in the past months since our location to the downtown area. Don’t just be a water or tea church though, that is a church whose extent of interaction is to offer a homeless person a cup of water or tea, but instead, offer a ministry that gets to know people that helps them beyond the moment of their condition. Offer a service that goes towards building a sense of self-respect while at the same time promoting the reality of consequence for actions. Be a church that looks at, shares in life with, those who Jesus has called us to be with and love. When churches do their part, then small churches like Mosaic will not have to bare the burden of ministry on their backs alone. Let me say with caution as I am concerned how many will respond to this, but I am honored that my family will once again with the completion of this ministry, go on serving the homeless at a great cost, including the likelihood that we will have a drastic reduction in finance as we won’t have a guaranteed income outside of what little we get from The Virtual Pew, speaking opportunities, and outside donations. But again, we do this gladly, knowing that ‘what does it profit one to gain the whole world and lose their souls.’ We also know ‘man cannot live on bread alone, nor can we serve two masters.’ We serve with joy, despite the difficulty, because we know that the kingdom of God is advanced.

Mosaic will continue, I am looking forward to decent sleep hours over the next months, I am looking forward to seeing the day program hopefully come back to life, (we still need volunteers for this) and I am looking forward to doing what I can to serve those interested in Mosaic outside of the homeless population. There are still dreams, still visions to do not less, but to do more. To explore ways to offer services that will meet the needs of our people. Over the next months I joy at trying to discover ways, along with the congregation as to how we can serve those who actively become a part of our church, including our homeless members. I also joy in the start up and exploration of a Celebrate Recovery Group and weekly day and evening gatherings to discuss scripture and life. There is a future, and God is still Jehovah Jireh so I am excited.

This week we will have tonight, (Friday) a gathering of youth and adults to go to Lake Eldorado to participate in a bonfire together. Robert Beard a new participant at the church helping with the youth will be leading this and future activities. We are also going to be hosting from the Wichita Police Department Officer Nathan on Sunday morning as he discusses the new proposal before the city of Wichita having to deal with serving the homeless in our city, The HOT program. As a church we will evaluate the program in consideration of writing a letter of support from the church to the city in support of this new proposed program.

There is more in the future for Mosaic. Despite what some have thought, we have grown in many ways, God continues to provide enough funds to get by, but we still need you and want you to stay involved, supporting the work of the church, as well as the ministry that God has not just called Mosaic to, but I believe the church as a whole.

We also realize that many receiving our newsletter or seeing this on the web are part of other churches. We want to pray for your church or you as an individual as you have need, we also appreciate the prayers and support that you can offer our way. You can do this in a variety of ways, either donating on line at our web site at www.mocaicwichita.com or at our Mailing Address: P.O. Box 47261, Wichita, KS 67201, however you contribute, it is greatly appreciated.

We appreciate all you have done, and if you want to be on the weekly email list for Mosaic where you will receive regular updates, and/or the weekly bulletin, don’t hesitate letting us know by emailing me at mikefurches@yahoo.com or letting us know by visiting our web site.

Now as a last note, I know many are going to the movies this weekend to see The Hunger Games. While it may be a worthwhile film to see, I will also encourage you to consider the movie October Baby, see my recent review of the film here - http://mikefurchesreviews.blogspot.com/2012/03/october-baby.html

Blessings to you and may God bless you in your faithfulness to His Call.

Mosaic Weekly Update

Over the last weeks things have been a little hectic at Mosaic due to a number of events. I guess the hectic nature comes with the ministry we often do, just this afternoon I heard of one of the ladies we serve who just lost her baby which died this morning. She didn’t have custody of the baby but this doesn’t negate the hurt. We also have one of our volunteers whom I have had the honor of mentoring that lost his mother last weekend. Unfortunately he had been saving to buy him a truck as he has been working, but he had to use $2,200 of his earnings to pay for his mother’s funeral. There have been other things happening, but the ministry God has called us to isn’t just a call, it is a commitment.

This weekend on Saturday we are planning on feeding as we have the Wichita Police Department come to our facility to discuss and present the new planning and efforts that are being proposed regarding policies and treatment of Wichita’s homeless. It is an honor to host this meeting and everyone is invited. The meeting starts at noon, we will open the doors at 11:30, serve food shortly after the presentation starting at approximately 12:45. Eastside Church of God is coming to help serve and prepare the food so we expect to have a full house.

This Sunday we continue the series on the Gospel of Luke. This week we look at the call of Jesus on our lives. This is a concept many don’t think about as much, but as we look at the message this weekend, we will certainly see the importance of all of us considering the call of God on our lives.

As usual the bulletin for the week is attached. There are a lot of things happening in the next month as we wind down the service of the evening shelter program. Pray for the ladies who will have no place to go, as well as the future plans of Mosaic in this ministry. If we had 10 churches designate $1,000 per month, we would have enough income to continue shelter services plus full-funding for the day program 365 days. There are differences in the services provided those we are honored to serve at Mosaic, all one has to do is come, ask for themselves, at any time, and they will quickly see a ministry that cares, and treats people like the prized possessions of God they are is needed.

Thanks again, for your willingness to read through, and pray for the ministry of Mosaic. We appreciate it and also offer our prayers for your group, or congregation. Just let us know, we promise, we have faithful men and women who will certainly pray for you and your church.

Blessings,

Pastor Mike
